Adding a vehicle type

Updated on 11 September 2026

Vehicle Types allow you to categorise your fleet based on size, capacity, and operational purpose.

Configuring Vehicle Types ensures that vehicles inherit standard default capacities, automated booking schedules, and custom walkaround check templates.

Stream includes several pre-configured Vehicle Types by default, but you can create custom types to suit your specific fleet requirements.

Adding a new Vehicle Type

  1. In the main menu, click ‘Vehicle Types’
  2. Click the ‘Add’ button to create a new Vehicle Type. Alternatively, you can select an existing Vehicle Type from the list and click ‘Copy’. This will pre-populate the fields with all existing attributes, which can be amended as required.
  3. It is necessary to complete the following mandatory fields, however, we recommend adding as much detail to the Vehicle Type as possible:
    1. Vehicle Type: Enter a short, unique code to act as the ID
    2. Description: Enter a clear label for the vehicle type, up to 35 characters
    3. Vehicle Category: Select the appropriate vehicle classification from the drop-down menu
    4. Driver Licence Required: Select the minimum licence category needed to operate this vehicle type
    5. Default Payload & Cube Capacities: Specify standard weight and volume limits to speed up individual vehicle creation
  4. Click ‘Save’

Once created, the new Vehicle Type will immediately become available in the ‘Vehicle Type’ drop-down menu when adding or editing vehicles.

Please Note

If you update an existing vehicle’s assigned Vehicle Type, its default payload and cube capacities will update to the new defaults automatically, and its maintenance schedule will refresh with any newly associated booking types upon saving.

Customising walkaround checklists and booking schedules

Once a Vehicle Type has been created or copied, you can create tailored walkaround checklists and configure any recurring vehicle bookings to it:

  • Custom Check Types: Tailor daily walkaround check questions specifically for this vehicle type. For detailed instructions, please see our guide on Creating custom checks & check types
  • Default Booking Types: Automate recurring maintenance, MOT, or servicing schedules for all vehicles assigned to this type. For more information, see our guide on Creating a vehicle booking type
